eSIM at Málaga Airport (AGP)
Land connected: mobile data from the moment you touch down — no roaming surprises, no SIM-shop queues.
The first thing most travellers need at Málaga isn’t a taxi — it’s data. Your transfer confirmation, the hotel address, maps, WhatsApp: all of it waits behind a connection. An eSIM gives you Spanish mobile data from the second you land, bought and installed before you even leave home.
Why sort data before you land
AGP has free WiFi (“Airport Free Wifi Aena”), but airport WiFi is shared, slow at peak times, and drops the moment you walk to the taxi rank or the train station. Roaming on your home plan is the other option — and an expensive one: UK travellers have faced daily roaming charges in the EU since Brexit, and visitors from outside Europe can pay far more. EU residents generally roam in Spain at domestic rates, but fair-use limits and operator quirks still catch people out. A local-data eSIM sidesteps all of it for typically a few euros — check current plan prices on the provider’s site, as they change.
How an eSIM works
An eSIM is a SIM card in software. You buy a data plan online, receive a QR code by email, and scan it in your phone’s mobile settings — the whole thing takes a few minutes on WiFi. When your flight lands at AGP, the eSIM connects to a Spanish network automatically. Your physical SIM stays in the phone, so your normal number keeps working for calls and texts (dual SIM) — the eSIM simply handles data. No shop, no queue, no swapping tiny pieces of plastic at baggage reclaim.
eSIM options for Málaga
Several providers sell Spain data plans that work at AGP. Yesim is a popular pick for Spain trips with straightforward plans. Airalo is the biggest eSIM marketplace globally with a wide range of Spain packages. Saily, from the NordVPN team, is another solid option with simple pricing. Plans and prices shift — compare data allowances and validity periods on the provider’s site for your trip length, and buy from the one that fits. Will it work on my phone?
Probably, if your phone is from the last few years: iPhones from the XS onward, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and most recent flagships support eSIM. Look in your settings for “Add eSIM” or “Add mobile plan”. Two exceptions: very old phones, and phones locked to a carrier that restricts eSIM — check both before you buy. If eSIM won’t work for you, a physical Spanish prepaid SIM from a shop in the resorts remains the fallback.
